Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

This is a marvellous book written by Roald Dahl. If you haven´t read it yet it´s about time. The lazy ones can watch one of the movies. Or do both.

Recently I finished reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to my eldest son, who is about to turn seven in a couple of weeks. We both loved the book.

I just saw that there is a sequel: "Charlie and the Great glass elevator. Guess what we will be reading in the near future!

The first time I heard "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was when I was little.  Ernst-Hugo Järegård (a Swedish actor) read the book along an animated slideshow. Well, it was pretty much still photos. That was what TV was like in the 80s! But it was really good! Ernst-Hugo was fabulous. Below you can watch a clip from the TV-show. (In Swedish)

The story in short

It´s about the boy Charlie Bucket who find a golden ticket inside the wrapping of a chocolate bar. The ticket grants him a visit to the chocolate factory of the strange Willy Wonka. Charlie and four other kids get to spend a day in the factory and experience many exiting things. For instance they get to ride in a boat made of caramel on a chocolate river and meet the mysterious Oompa Loompas.

If you by any small chance don´t know the ending you have to read it yourself, alternatively watch one of the movies.

Movie 1: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

The premier of the movie was in 1971, starring Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka.

It was financed by Quaker Oats Company. The name was changed from the original title because it was supposed to advertise their new chocolate brand: "Wonka chocolate bars". But the chocolate bars turned out to be faulty in some way and was only sold for a short period of time. The brand is now owned by Nestlé who still sells Wonka candy in USA.

Movie 2: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The premier of the movie was in 2005. It was directed by Tim Burton (one of my favourites) and Willy Wonka was starred by Johnny Depp (also a favourite). The music was written by Danny Elfman (another favourite) who did the voices of the Oompa Loompas himself. This movie is said to keep more to the original story than the first.

Much of the props were really made of chocolate and candy, the trees, flower etc. They were made by a chocolate store in Brighton:Choccywoccydoodah.

Which movie did you like the best?

A song from the soundtrack: The Candyman can

The song is from the first movie. You can find the lyrics at ST Lyrics. There you can find more lyrics from the movie.

Buy the suit of Willy Wonka and a Golden ticket of your own

Most things can be bought for money. Maybe you would like to own a replica of the suit worn by Gene Wilder in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory"? You can find it on Etsy for just $450.

On Etsy you can also buy a replica of the golden ticket from the same movie. They cost $9 each. I bet my son would like one of those. Maybe I could make my own replica?

Willy Wonka quotes

Following quotes are from the movies. Most of them are not in the book. Many of the Willy Wonka quotes from the first movie are originally from other authors, such as William Shakespeare, John Keats and Oscar Wilde

Movie 1:

"There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you'll be free if you truly wish to be."

"If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it."

"Where is fancy bred, in the heart or in the head?"

"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

"So much time and so little to do. Wait a minute. Strike that. Reverse it."

"Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker."

Movie 2:

"The best kind of prize is a *sur*prise!"

"Little girl? Don't touch that squirrel's nuts! It'll make him crazy!"

"Can you imagine Augustus-flavored, chocolate-coated Gloop? Ew, no one would buy it."

Are you a Willy Wonka expert?

Try yourself in one of the quizes at funtrivia. I tried the first. It did not go that well. I got 1672 out of 2500 fick. But the questions were based on the movies, not the book. It was a really long time since I saw any of them.

How much do you know about "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"?
